My Favourite Book Mothers

In honour of Mothers Day (and because my dogs woke me up at 6am, demanded cuddles and then fell back asleep because they're adorable JERKS so I now have some spare time) I thought I would make a list of some of my favourite badass book mums.
Daenerys Targaryen from A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin
How could I NOT start with Daenerys?! She is literally the MOTHER OF DRAGONS. AS IF THAT'S NOT INSANELY COOL.
Reasons why I love Daenerys:
- she doesn't stand for ANYONE'S shit
- dragons
- she has pretty hair
- seriously someone teach me to braid like that
- she makes smart decisions and is good at things and frees slaves
- dragons
Molly Weasley from Harry Potter by J. K. Rowling
I have so much love for Molly. I love how she knits jumpers for everyone each Christmas. I love how she welcomes Harry into their family/house. I ESPECIALLY LOVE how she stands up to Bellatrix that time and you're just cheering her on even though horrible stuff is happening.
I also have a lot of respect for Molly Weasley and I think she's an underrated character. She goes through so many horrific things that kind of get swept aside/downplayed compared to everything else going on. That moment in Order of the Phoenix where she faces the boggart hits me hard every time and really makes me appreciate what a strong woman she is.
Also, she calls Bellatrix a bitch.
(Who made this gif? But seriously. THANK YOU).
Madeline, Celeste and Jane from Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty
This book took me completely by surprise because the premise doesn't really sound like something I would get too caught up in. We follow the lives of these three women and their families, and it sounds like it's just going to be 'school-mum-drama' but then something happens at a school event and we find out so much more about everyone's lives and what they're doing day-to-day to not only survive, but protect their children. Madeline, Celeste and Jane are VERY different, but they really demonstrate how important it is for women to stick together instead of tearing each other apart. Independently, they are already strong but together they are formidable. Madeline is also just so over-the-top and dramatic sometimes which is a hilarious break from the sometimes tough topics this book addresses. Also, there are Star Wars references which I appreciate and consider good parenting.
(They've adapted this into a TV show and I NEEEEEEEED TO SEE IT HOW DO I WATCH IT IN AUSTRALIA PLS HALP).
Emily Spier from Simon vs the Homosapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli
Ok basically any character EVER from this book could make a 'best 'x' characters' list but Simon's parents are the most perfect quirky/cute/dorky/but-not-too-lame parents of a teenager in any book I've ever read. They're both so accepting and supportive of their kids, and they have some really cute family traditions that make you cringe just the right amount. They're not perfect - they make such a big deal about EVERYTHING their kids do that even they describe it as creepy. But so many books I read have parents who just don't seem to care about their kids so it was nice to read about parents who maybe just care too much.
Sissix from The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers
Sissix isn't a mother in the traditional sense of the word, however I couldn't not include her on this list. She is Aandrisk (a reptilian species from Hashkath) and their 'family' structure is complex and involves things like 'hatch families' and 'feather families' and offspring aren't raised by their genetic parents... but all of that confusion aside. Sissix is wonderful and technically (for the purpose of this list) she is a mother. HAH.
She is the pilot of the Wayfarer and she was just such a great part of the already awesome group of characters. I've said before that this book has very little plot (literally nothing happens but nothing happens in space, which is my favourite place for nothing to happen) but you read this book for the characters. You learn so much about them all and by the end you feel as if you've known them your entire life and I LOVE THAT.
Also, space.
(Notice the precise moment I ran out of gifs that directly relate to the books mentioned THIS IS FINE).
So happy Mothers' Day everyone!
